Sparkle Boy, by Lesléa Newman,
illustrated by Maria Mola
Casey is a 3 year old boy who wants a shimmery skirt, glittery painted nails, and a sparkly bracelet, everything his older sister Jessie has, but Jessie does not approve, insisting that boys don’t… but their mum, dad, and grandma say there’s no problem with the boy wearing these things…
Jessie reluctantly goes to the library with her “Sparkle boy” brother, where kids
mistaking Casey for a girl, laugh at him when he says he is a boy. Jessie
transitions emotionally from annoyance to embracing her brother, and leaping to
his defense when he is bullied. Later, when they both return home, Jessie brings
out the sparkly nail polish and paints Casey’s nails herself!
